Get to know Just Paws Transport

Just Paws Pet Transport is a boutique, VIP (very important pet) delivery service based in Cleveland, OH. We have been in business just over a year and have worked exclusively with quality breeders from coast-to-coast. It is just me, Matt, and sometimes, my wife, Lisa. We don’t have teams of drivers in every state, and if we commit to a drive or a flight, your puppy will be with one or both of us the entire time.

Though our service is new, our experience traveling with pets is not. When we married seven years ago, we set out on an ultimate road trip. It lasted two years. Matt, Lisa, and our ShihTzu, Della. We researched as we drove dog-friendly hotels, restaurants, parks, and other locations. Where we went, Della went with us.

Matt’s family has been in the pet industry business for nearly 20 years. Lisa and I have been working exclusively with breeders since we started Just Paws Pet Transport. However, we do things a little different and work directly with the families needing transport, rather than the breeder having to pass along our quote or add it to the pricing of their puppies.

We have only just begun posting to social media pages and working with families who are not connected to our breeders. See below our note regarding rescues and shelters. Some may wonder why our rates are higher than average, so we thought we’d layout exactly how we work and what’s included in every quote we offer.

How Our Quotes Work

Our quotes include roundtrip mileage, gas, and lodging if a trip will take more than a day* for ground transport, and roundtrip airfare for flight nanny services, ticket for your puppy (usually around $100-$125 on ever airline), plus time for both options.

What You Can Expect

Flight Nanny

We only fly one puppy at a time, and on rare occasions two. If the flight makes sense for two puppies, then we both fly. Each person in charge of a single puppy. Your puppy is never alone and never ‘stacked.’

  • Airline ticket costs – we are at the mercy of the airlines here. Though, if you would like to share your airline points, we’re happy to accommodate and discuss this option. One of our clients suggested it to have her pup delivered, and it worked out quite well. Puppy tickets – again, this is set by the airlines and we have no control over this expense.
  • Time and care – Most flights begin early and end late. We do our best to find times that fit with our families’ schedules, and have delivered pups early lunch hour to end of work day. We work in our searches to not be delivering puppies after 8 PM. This is better for the pet, too, as the stress of travel affects them just as much as it does us humans. Your puppy is carried in a soft-sided airline-approved travel carrier outfitted with peepads, a collapsible water/food bowl, paper towels and handwipes, a scented towel or Snuggle Puppy (available for purchase with mom and littermates’ scent), and loved and cared for along the way as if the pup were our own.
Ground Transport

We travel with no more than 4 or 5 puppies per trip in our red Subaru Impreza. To deliver older dogs, we take no more than 1 or 2. Puppies in ground transport travel in the same soft-sided travel carriers we use for our flight nanny option. Older dogs are in medium-sized wire crates with plenty of room to stand up and turn around and outfitted with soft padding as close to a doggy bed as we can manage.

Both puppies and adults have their own food and water bowls, gullet or bully sticks to keep them busy on the drive, and a soft scented towel or Snuggle Puppy for their comfort.

  • Ground costs include – RT mileage from our base in Cleveland to the final destination set at around $.60/mile, gas, lodging*, if needed. For example, if your pup is based in Louisville, KY and you need it delivered to Maine. Mileage begins in Cleveland to Louisville to Maine.
  • Time and care – We do our best to find times that fit with our families’ schedules, and have delivered pups early lunch hour to end of work day. We work in our searches to not be delivering puppies after 8 PM.

This is better for the pet, too, as the stress of travel affects them just as much as it does us humans. Your puppy is carried in a soft-sided airline-approved travel carrier outfitted with peepads, a collapsible water/food bowl**, paper towels and handwipes, a scented towel or Snuggle Puppy (available for purchase with mom and littermates’ scent), and loved and cared for along the way as if the pup were our own.

Base Minimum: $400 and up.

*A word about lodging – while we do our best to deliver your pup the day of, sometimes distance precludes this. However, when we do stop, we carry a Play Pen and the pup’s travel carriers inside to the room.

We keep your puppy with us AT ALL TIMES until he or she is delivered safely to your door. The Play Pen allows us to let the puppies out of the crates to expend some energy without worrying about them chewing on cables, getting under beds or behind dressers, or generally getting into things they shouldn’t.

Then, when it’s time to go to sleep, everyone is returned to snuggle in their travel carrier for the night. In the morning, one more round in the Play Pen before they get put in the car again. Everyone is fed at night before bed and a little on the road. We will pull over to stop and feed them, wait to see if they need to go, and won’t begin the trip until everyone is cleaned up.

International Transport: Canada ONLY

Matt has a Carrier Code which allows him transport a puppy or dog to the Canadian border from the U.S. The nearest crossings if you get your puppy from the Mid-Atlantic, Mid-West, or NE regions are at Buffalo, NY/Ft. Erie, ON and Detroit, MI.

We are working on a cost-effective plan for Canadian deliveries outside Ontario. Currently, costs include flight to nearest US airport to your border crossing, rental car to drive puppy to the border, and possibly lodging depending on return schedule.

If you’re getting a puppy from an American breeder and need it transported internationally, you MUST have: USDA-certified vet health records, a receipt, and a bill of sale for puppies under 3-months-old. For dogs older than 3 months, you need the same PLUS a Rabies Certification.

All costs above apply for Canadian transport, too.

We do not yet transport beyond the borders of Canada or the United States. If and when we’re able to do this, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Rescue Operations or Shelter Moves

If families have found pups through these means, we are delighted your puppy has found a home. But please note: We will absolutely only travel with one dog at a time. These guys have spent enough time cooped up with other dogs. This way, we can give them undivided attention, and get them used to being part of a ‘family’.
